I have a fun topic for you all today that, for some reason, I haven't really shared with y'all before. At least, I haven't really spent a great deal of time writing about it.
You all know I love books. I also love a good beverage when I indulging in a page turner. In the morning and afternoon, I generally will make myself an iced coffee or visit my favorite local coffee shop, book in hand, and sip away during my literary escape.
I also love a good margarita or a glass of wine while reading. And writing. Currently sipping on a creamy glass of Arroyo Seco Chardonnay from OneHope (which I can't wait to tell you more about this amazing winery).
You should also know this about me: I am passionate about supporting businesses that have a give back component built into their business model.
I would love to share two of them with you today.
First, have you heard of Bookshop.org? For my fellow book-obsessed, this is probably not a new company to you. However, I was perusing one of my favorite personal finance bloggers (have you met Katie Gatti Tassin over at Money With Katie?) and I ventured over to her book recommendations page on her blog. I love getting recommendations for new reads. I also feel like I get to know a person, sorta, by checking out their book recs. Is that weird? Creepy? Not sure. Anywho, that was how I discovered Bookshop.
Why do I love them so? Well, for one, their mission.
Their website states their mission way better than I ever could. Copied from their website on their about page:
Bookshop.org works to connect readers with independent booksellers all over the world. We believe local bookstores are essential community hubs that foster culture, curiosity, and a love of reading, and we're committed to helping them thrive.
Every purchase on the site financially supports independent bookstores. Our platform gives independent bookstores tools to compete online and financial support to help them maintain their presence in local communities.
Y'all, when I read that, I was finished. Done. All in!!!! I typically purchase books from Amazon, and while I am not against Amazon and will still shop there quite a bit, I really do want to spend more of my dollars in places that make an impact locally. I believe it is crucial to our livelihood and to our economies and communities to support small and support local as often as we can. I get it that sometimes it costs a teeny bit more. And sure, you may not get your product as fast as the two day shipping you are promised (with your annual fee).
With that said, I feel a lot better inside knowing that my money is doing something good. I can't take my money with me when I die. I can choose, then, to invest in what is worthwhile to me. Plus, readers are leaders....so why the heck would we not support our local libraries and bookstores.
I instantly created an affiliate account for Dream BuildHer, so that I could share DBBs book club recs, and also so you could take advantage of supporting your favorite local bookstore. If you are a fellow booklover like me, and you love sharing book recs, you should create an affiliate as well. Your people will support you and they get to participate in giving back. Wooo hooo!!! A win for everyone!
Next up: allow me to introduce to you OneHope Wine.
A little backstory. We are talking 2020. Everyone is shut down. I am going through a divorce while also having to be at home with my kids, my sister, brother in law and nephew at their home. Couldn't go to work for a bit because the firm I was working for at the time had to let people go. So here I was, drinking way more wine than one should. Playing board games (y'all I am not a board game person and I often protested when asked to participate), and feeling a little stir crazy. Not to mention that gathering around with friends was forbidden for awhile and I was not able to go to work. I looked into a few online side gigs that were available and doing well and I loved their products. Social selling was BOOMING during covid. It would have been stupid of me to not at least do some research and find other ways to make income.
Side note: I also love direct sales companies. It is a fantastic way for those who are looking for an entry way in to building a business. Not to mention that the majority of direct sales companies have a very affordable business kit to start. This specific topic is for another time. But know for now, I LOVE them!
I discovered OneHope during my scrolls through my social media pages. It's like my phone knew that I was drinking a glass of moscato almost daily. Would you believe that it would take me nearly two years before I decided to actually join OneHope as a cause entrepreneur and try their wine?
So, who is OneHope? What are they about?
ONEHOPE is a cause focused winery based in Napa. Their mission is to share wine with friends and give back to non-profits, one wine bottle at a time. They have the only impact driven wine club, where every wine club order gives back to your cause of choice.
I also host private wine tastings that allow us to gather together in living rooms and kitchens and homes across the US, sip delicious wine, and raise money for a cause that is close to our heart. 10% of every order is donated to your choice of charity.
Plus, wine makes for a great gift and a great way to celebrate every single moment in our lives. Oh and have you see their shimmer bottles? Yes, please!
It also makes for a really fun side gig. Sharing wine with friends, making a difference and you can make some money? Why not? Everyone wins!
We vote with our dollars. I believe that it matters where we spend our time and our money. I think it is good that we put more into local communities and businesses because that is where the most change can start to take shape. Impact in small things lead to catalysts for bigger and broader change.
Since most of my readers are women, I would say, friends, that we have an incredible opportunity here. Last year, women helped the economy thanks to Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and the Barbie movie. Let's keep up that momentum with our purchasing power AND our innate ability to connect, serve, and lead with generosity and champion good.
Cheers to a good read and an amazing glass of wine. And an ever better cheers to impacting your community for good.
Your Dream BuildHer Bestie,
Tiffany Rhea
